TITLE: CBM & 2.0
Over the past few days I have had a major flurry of phone calls because of
a rumor about CBM not releasing 2.0 to the existing A500/200/3000 base. It
is already rampent on Usenet, Genie and BIX, and I suspect it has been
mentioned here on CIS.
Because of the sheer number of people discussing it, I decided to call CBM
and get some form of comment. Today I have spoken with James Dionne, who
heads the US operations for CBM, and discussed these rumors. He is aware of
them, and gave me a statement on CBM's policy on 2.0, which will be printed
in an upcoming issue. However, he also stated I could post the informtion
on the nets, which I am now doing.
According to James Dionne, CBM *DOES* plan on releasing 2.0 for the
existing base of machines. He said that at the last WOA show he announced a
mid-July release date, but for a variety of reasons that date will not be
met. The current plan is to have enhancer kits available around the 1st of
October, about 6 weeks from now.
He also said new machines will have the 2.0 ROMs in the future, but a date
for implementing that had not yet been established.
This is all the information I have at this time, but I wanted to post it
because of the high interest level.

According to a message posted today on usenet, Commodore has shipped
another disk-based upgrade for A3000 owners. QUOTE:
It is a 5 disk set, and includes several changes, including the awaited
"Outline Font Technology". It should be available at you dealer,we got ours
Saturday. Also include in the package was a letter from VP of sales
Geoffrey Stiles with several interesting announcements. Of interest is the
extension of the Power-Up program, until September 30, 1991. Of particular
interest was this blurb:
"As you know, to upgrade an A500 or A2000 series machine to 2.0, a 2.0
ROM Enhancer Kit is necessary. The details of the Enhancer Kit and upgrade
procedures are currently being adressed. We will notify you of the details
surrounding this procedure as soon as they are finalized"
This is the first "official" statement I have seen concerning any sort of
plans for ugrading the A500. It's about time! UNQUOTE.

The following is a statement from Bill Sydnes, Commodore's VP of
Engineering, regarding the status of the 2.0 release of the Amiga operating
system:
As part of Commodore's ongoing commitment to our customers, I am pleased to
announce completion of Release 2 of the Amiga Operating System.
Today's Amiga Release 2 is very different from the Release 2 first shipped
with the Amiga 3000. Many additional man-years of effort have been
invested to create a polished, stable, compatible, tested release that
Commodore will build on for the future. Several hundred official beta
testers provided feedback, resulting in the best tested, most trouble-free
and reliable operating system for the Amiga ever.
For existing Amiga 3000 owners, Commodore plans to release a five disk
update set. For A500/A2000 owners, Commodore will make available a Release
2 Enhancer Kit, with new ROM, diskettes and full documentation.
Installation will be through an Authorized Commodore Service Center.
Release 2 Enhancer Kits will be available beginning in October. Pricing
will be announced shortly.
Following shipment of Release 2 Enhancer Kits, Commodore will gradually
phase Release 2 into new unit production.
Release 2 is a major step forward in software technology, and is part of
Commodore's commitment to keeping the Amiga competitive, and looking to the
future.

I got a little closer to the 2.0 enhancer kit today, my local
dealer(Philadelphia, Pa.) had a price ($89.95 for rom, disks and manual)
and told me he would have the kits by the end of the month. Gave him an
order, and based on CBM's past performance I'm giving the end of the month
a 50/50 chance <G>.
